Mr. Rudy Gilbert,  Director of Bands

Mr. Gilbert has been the Director of Bands at Norcross High School since 2001.  Under his direction, the Norcross Bands have grown to include over 240 students participating in three concert ensembles, the Marching Band, Jazz Band, Basketball Band, Percussion Ensemble and the NHS Winterguard.  Please visit the Ensembles link for detailed information on the accomplishments of the NHS Bands.
Mr. Gilbert holds a position on the staff of the Georgia Ambassadors of Music having completed three highly successful European Tours.  Prior to his appointment at NHS, Mr. Gilbert was the Director of Bands at South Effingham High School in Guyton, Georgia, since its inception in 1996.  Mr. Gilbert was named the STAR Teacher at SEHS in 1998.   He served as the Associate Conductor of the Savannah Winds Community Band at Armstrong Atlantic State University for three years and Principal Percussionist for six years and was the Assistant Director of the AASU Summer Music Institute.  Mr. Gilbert maintains an active conducting and adjudication schedule including guest conducting performances at the 2004 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Honors Band Festival, the University of Georgia Summer Music Camps, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Youth Wind Ensembles and the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.  He was the founding Director of Athletic Bands at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  Mr. Gilbert was presented the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association in January 2005 and 2007 and was inducted into the Georgia Chapter of Phi Beta Mu in March 2006.  Mr. Gilbert has served GMEA in District I as the Band Division Chair, Honor Band Organizing Chair, First Round Audition Chair, and in District 13 as the First Round Audition Chair and as Honor Band Organizing Chair.

Mr. Gilbert is a native of Mandeville, Louisiana.  He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1991 and a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1994.  He has studied conducting with Professor Thomas L. Dvorak at UWM and Professor Frank B. Wickes at LSU and studied percussion with Dr. John Raush at LSU.  Mr. Gilbert remains sincerely appreciative his first band directors,  Mr. John Gilmer at Collierville Middle School in Collierville, Tennessee and Mr. Doug Bergeron at Mandeville High School in Mandeville, Louisiana.  His professional affiliations include the National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, CBDNA, MENC, GMEA, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Percussive Arts Society.  He and his wife Amanda, reside in Gwinnett County.

Mr. Doug Maloney, Assistant Director of Bands

Mr. Maloney has been the Assistant Director of Bands 
at Norcross High School since 2008.  His duties include directing and assisting with three concert ensembles, the Blue Devil Marching Band, Basketball Band, and the Jazz Band.  Mr. Maloney is also the coordinator of the NHS Brass Chamber Music program, focusing on full ensemble and quintet repertoire.
Mr. Maloney currently holds a position as the Wind and Percussion Specialist for the Gwinnett County Youth Symphony.  He also serves GMEA in District 13, assisting with the organization for both the First Round Audition and District Honor Band.  Before coming to Norcross, Mr. Maloney served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Heritage High School in Conyers, GA.

Mr. Maloney received his Bachelor of Music Education Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia in 2006. While at UGA, Mr. Maloney was a performer with the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and numerous chamber brass ensembles.  He was also a member of the Redcoat Marching Band, serving as both the Trumpet Section Leader and Band Captain.  Mr. Maloney was a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps in 2006.  A trumpet student of Mr. Bill Siegfried and Professor W. Fred Mills, Mr. Maloney has instructed trumpet and brass clinics for the University of Georgia Summer Music Camps and numerous high schools and middle schools throughout Georgia.  He received the Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Instrumental Music Education Award in 2005 and the GMEA Collegiate Music Education Scholarship in 2006.   His professional affiliations include the National Band Association, GMEA, MENC, Pi Kappa Lambda, International Trumpet Guild, and the Cobb Wind Symphony.

A native of Burke, VA, Mr. Maloney is appreciative of the guidance and mentoring from his first band directors, Mrs. Gale Bayen at Cherry Run Elementary School and Mr. Lou Bean, Mrs. Melinda Hall, and Mr. Roy Holder at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  He is the son of Michael and Elaine Maloney.  His brother, Kevin, teaches trumpet at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
